In Halabja, local officials said that a 12-year-old boy died from an electric shock when an electric cable fell during the quake.

"Four people were killed by the earthquake" in Darbandikhan, the town's mayor Nasseh Moulla Hassan told AFP.

At least one person died and 50 were wounded after a major natural disaster struck large parts of Iraq on Sunday, according to local officials.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck 15.5 miles beneath the surface about 20 miles from Halabjah, Iraq. A magnitude 6.6 devastated the historic city of Bam in 2003, killing about 26,000 people.

A TASS correspondent reported from Kuwait City that earth tremors had been felt in that city.

Iranian social media was abuzz Sunday night with posts of people evacuating their homes, particularly in Kermanshah and Ghasr-e Shirin, where injured people were thought to be buried under the rubble.

Iran's state TV reported that at least eight villages were damaged in the natural disaster.
