Terror Plot Against British Prime Minister Stopped

A man appeared in court here Wednesday charged with plotting to assassinate British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Prime ministers have always been terrorist targets, though Downing Street is now well protected by fortified gates and armed police officers. However, it does not appear they were able to obtain or build any explosives. There have been at least five terrorist attacks or attempted attacks in Britain so far this year, Sky News reports.

Officials said it was the 22nd foiled plot since March as hundreds of terrorist suspects remain under investigation.

Both men, who indicated that they would plead not guilty, were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on December 20.

Earlier this week a spokesperson for Ms May said British authorities had foiled nine terrorist plots in the last 12 months.

Two men, aged 20 and 21, were detained on 28 November following an operation involving MI5 investigators and counter-terrorism police officers from Scotland Yard and the West Midlands.

Downing Street was targeted by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in 1991 when a mortar bomb attack was launched.

A spokesperson for the MI5 said that cabinet ministers heard that while the terror organization Islamic State (IS) had suffered defeat in Iraq and Syria, it did not mean the terror threat was over, but instead was spreading into new areas. Nobody was injured during that attack.
