Google's latest effort to fix fragmentation problem, launches Assistant for Marshmallow, Lollipop

From today, the Google Assistant will also work on the Android tablets and smartphones running on Android Lollipop & above.

The Google Assistant was first designed for smartphones running Android 7.0 Nougat and later for Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Later on, the feature will come to Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and South Korea. If you decide to do so, you will see the Google Assistant app icon on your "All apps" list. The voice assistant also learns the more you interact with it and will eventually offer you more functionality.

Google Assistant will enable users to ask questions, query the weather, integrate with other smart devices within your household and a suite more.

As with handsets, Google is offering the Google Assistant to tablet devices set to English, although it's not rolling it quite as far back as with mobiles.

Further, the update is only available for devices based on the English language for India, US, UK, Australia, Canada and Singapore.

Google Assistant was first announced at Google I/O previous year as the search giant's answer to Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana and Amazon's Alexa. Google Assistant has only been available on smartphones.

With this major expansion, Google said over 50 per cent of Android users across the world will have access to Google Assistant on their devices. Google also says that it optimized its preinstalled Google Apps to occupy half the space they used to, which in turn doubles the amount of storage available to the end user on a basic smartphone. In Google's Chrome browser, for instance, Data Saver can help users conserve more than 600 MB of data per year.
