Toronto billionaire and his wife found dead in their mansion

A Canadian billionaire and his wife were found dead in their home on Friday in what police have called "suspicious" circumstances.

Canadian police have said they are investigating the deaths of Barry Sherman the founder of Apotex Inc. a Canadian pharmaceutical company, and Honey his wife. When the real estate agent in charge of the sale was preparing the home to hold an open house, she discovered the bodies of the couple in the home's basement, reported a local paper.

Police were called to the Shermans' home in an upscale neighbourhood of north Toronto just before noon on Friday in response to a "medical complaint".

Two bodies covered in blankets were later seen being removed from the house.

Sherman has also been an active philanthropist, including donating $50 million to the United Jewish Appeal.

Sherman founded pharmaceutical firm Apotex, and was worth more than $3 billion, according to Forbes.

"All of us at Apotex are deeply shocked and saddened by this news and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time", the company said in a statement.

Sherman and his wife have four children together. "As employees, we are proud of his tremendous accomplishments, honoured to have known him, and vow to carry on with the Apotex goal in his honour".

Toronto Mayor John Tory said in statement he was "shocked and heartbroken" to learn of the deaths, noting that the couple had made extensive contributions to the city. "Our condolences to their family & friends, and to everyone touched by their vision & spirit".

Mrs Sherman sat on the boards of several hospital, charitable and Jewish foundations, and last month was awarded a Senate medal for community service. Neighbours confirmed that the property was the couple's home.

Eric Hoskins, Ontario's Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, tweeted: "I am beyond words right now".

He added that he hoped the police investigation would provide answers for those who were mourning the loss. Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in healthcare.
