Palestinians slam USA veto on Jerusalem resolution

Egyptian Foreign Ministry on Monday expressed regret at the UN Security Council's failure to pass the Egypt-drafted resolution on Jerusalem due to the US veto.

The Egyptian-drafted text reiterated the United Nations position on Jerusalem, affirming "that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council".

Britain's Permanent Representative Matthew Ryrcroft reflected the views of the other members when he said the U.S. decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital had no legal affect and his country disagreed with it.

With the Palestinians rejecting USA mediation, Russian Federation said it was ready to take over. But the Palestinians insist that East Jerusalem should be the capital of their future independent state.

The US was alone in voting against Monday's draft resolution at the Security Council, with the 14 other member countries voting in favour, including France and Britain, which are generally closely aligned with the US.

He added that the Arab group in the United Nations will convene later to assess the situation and determine the next step in order to defend the status of Jerusalem.

Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP in Arabic that the support for the resolution, which included USA allies France, Italy and Japan, "showed the (American) isolation".

"It's scandalous to say we are putting back peace efforts", she added. US Ambassador Nikki Haley who cast the veto slammed the rejected resolution as "an insult".

Following the US block on the U.N. resolution, a spokesman for Erdogan said that the annulment of Trump's decision would be sought in the U.N. General Assembly.

As the Russian diplomat called on all parties involved to "show restraint" he said: "We are ready to become an honest mediator here", making thinly veiled remarks that the US' steps are favouring Israel.

The draft resolution had included a call on all countries to refrain from opening embassies in Jerusalem, reflecting concerns that other governments could follow the USA lead.

"Given the chance to vote again", said Haley to the Council, "I can say with complete confidence, we would vote no and exercise our veto power".

The vetoed resolution would also have reiterated a call to reverse "the negative trends on the ground that are imperiling the two-state solution" that would see the states of Israel and the Palestine living side-by-side in peace.

A communique issued after the summit said the participants considered the move to be a declaration that Washington was withdrawing from its role "as sponsor of peace" in the Middle East.

The only support for the United States came from Israel.

"Thank you, Ambassador Haley", he posted on his official Twitter account.
