UAE carriers stop Tunisian links after terrorist risk alert

Last night, Emirates said it was suspending its flights to Tunisia indefinitely shortly after the Tunis government said it had banned UAE carriers.

While the UAE said that "security information" had caused the original delays, and that the temporary ban had already been lifted, Tunisia's transport ministry said that the landing-ban would stay in place until the UAE was able to "operate flights in accordance with law and worldwide agreements".

In a statement, Tunisia's transport ministry on its Facebook page said that it "has chose to suspend flights of Emirates Airlines to and from Tunisia until the company can find a suitable solution to operate its flights in accordance with worldwide laws and treaties".

As per UAE, the delay was caused by "security information".

"We have contacted our Tunisian brothers about security information that necessitated taking specific and circumstantial measures", Gargash said on Twitter. "We highly value Tunisian women and respect them", he said, without elaborating.

The build up to the suspended flights followed anger in Tunisia over repeated reports of Tunisian women being banned from boarding Emirate flights from Tunis to Dubai.

"We should avoid misleading attempts".

Despite the clarification, Tunisian rights groups issued a statement on Saturday condemning the UAE measures as "discriminatory and racist".

Meanwhile, according to Al Ain news, Tunisian presidency spokesperson Saeeda Qureshi said, "The measures that the UAE took regarding travel of Tunisian women, are considered part of their sovereignty procedures, and not a sign of a trust crisis between the two countries".
