Oakland Raiders to name Jon Gruden head coach on Tuesday

The Oakland Raiders seem set to make ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden a lucrative offer to become the next head coach of the franchise.

His final game with Oakland was among the most controversial losses in National Football League history, when the Raiders lost to the New England Patriots on the infamous Tom Brady "Tuck Rule" non-fumble call.

Yes, that infamous Tuck Game, in which the Patriots defeated the Raiders 16-13. Speculation grew when the Tennessee Volunteers began their search for a head coach, and Gruden's former team in Tampa Bay had reportedly looked into hiring the Super Bowl-winning coach before retaining Dirk Koetter.

Gruden is said to have agreed to a 10-year deal worth more than $100 million with the team he coached from 1998-2001.

Gruden, who coached Oakland from 1998 to 2001 and has been working as an ESPN analyst, is returning to the Raiders to replace Jack Del Rio, who was sacked after the regular-season finale on Sunday.

They are showing me great commitment, great behaviours. "Do the recent results against them give us extra motivation? Yes". My players are clever (enough) to go game by game not listen to these rumours - and a lot of them aren't true".

The Oakland Raiders have apparently completed their interview process and decided on their next head coach, and you will never guess who landed the job.

After going 40-28 in four seasons at Oakland, Gruden replaced the fired Tony Dungy as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 as part of a trade deal that saw the Raiders receive two first-round NFL Draft picks, two second-round choices and $8 million. Overall, Gruden is 95-81 in 11 seasons.

"I can tell you we believe the Rooney Rule was complied with", Lockhart said. Shell went 2-14 that season and was sacked after one year.

ESPN's Adam Schefter later confirmed the report.
