Kenyan opposition MP charged with treason over Raila Odinga's 'swearing in'
Feb 07, 2018, 01:40
A Kenyan opposition lawyer, Miguna Miguna, has been charged with treason over the mock "swearing in" as president of opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Odinga, who has on several occasions described the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta as illegitimate, told the media before leaving the venue that "we have accomplished our promise to Kenyans". When private citizen Okiya Omtatah took the government to the high court over the shutdown, the court demanded the stations be put back on air, pending a hearing on February 14. The United States, the United Nations and former colonial ruler Britain strongly criticised the government's censorship.
Worldwide media stations from around the globe on Monday highlighted the government's defiance to keep the stations off-air, despite a court order to restore broadcast.
Also on Monday, police teargassed demonstrators demanding the stations reopen as they tried to march on government offices.
No one from the government was immediately available for comment.
Odinga claims he, not President Uhuru Kenyatta, is the real victor of a presidential election held in August but later nullified by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds.
