Gazprom vows to defend rights after legal loss against Ukraine
Mar 04, 2018, 03:53
The head of Gazprom, Aleksei Miller, stated that the company was terminating all contracts with Ukraine immediately. This was reported by Interfax with reference to the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprom Alexander Medvedev.
Ukraine on Friday urged schools to close and factories to cut production after Russian Federation refused to restart natural gas deliveries, while residents shivered as the country strained to save on gas supplies. The decision seriously violates the balance of interests of the parties under these contracts, according to Miller. We are totally against the situation when Ukraine's economic problems are solved at our expense.
Almost four years after failing to agree on a price for Russian gas shipments, Ukraine's state-owned energy company has declared victory in worldwide arbitration that orders Russia's Gazprom to pay $2.56 billion for failing to fulfil export volume obligations.
But it said the court's decision had created a "material imbalance, which infringes the basic principals of Swedish law, which regulates the (gas) contract".

Ukraine's state-owned gas company, Naftogaz, said Wednesday it's due to receive $2.56 billion from Gazprom after the Stockholm Arbitral Tribunal ruled the Russian firm defaulted on its obligations regarding volumes to be moved through Ukraine.
Naftogaz declined immediate comment on the decision. The Russian side has returned the funds to Naftogaz in full.
"At the same time, Gazprom did not supply Naftogaz with 18 million cubic meters of gas, for which the company made a prepayment". What is unclear is how the transit deal will be affected by the row: Gazprom delivers some 80% of the approximately 110bcm of gas it sends to its Western European customers via the ironically named Druzhba, or "Friendship", pipeline that runs across Ukraine.
