'Put That Impeachment Down!' Trump Helps Himself to Teasing at Gridiron Dinner

Trump was the guest of honour at the 133rd Gridiron dinner, where prominent Washington-based journalists traditionally make fun of the president and take jabs at the U.S. political scene.

The event at the Renaissance Washington, - with men in white ties and women in evening gowns, is more insider-ish and less high-profile than the celebrity filled White House Correspondents Association dinner, slated for April 28.

"My staff was concerned that I couldn't do self-deprecating humor", Trump said. "And I told them not to worry, nobody does self-deprecating humor better than I do", he quipped Saturday.

Trump found himself on the other end of ribbing, too - skits by Gridiron members included Fox News host Bret Baier making cracks at the Russia probe, singing to the tune of "You Can't Hurry Love" with lyrics that included "But how many Russians did the campaign meet?/Don Jr.in Trump Tower, about "adoption" - sure". I just won't. As far as the risk of dealing with a madman is concerned, that's his problem, not mine.

Turning to the media, Trump said he and The New York Times are both New York City icons - "the only difference is I still own my buildings".

In his response Trump made fun of the leaders of the opposition Democratic party but didn't spare members of his own party, even Vice President Mike Pence, who also attended the dinner. "That guy leaked more than the Titanic!"

Breaking an nearly all-day Twitter silence, President Donald Trump boasted to his online followers that he was happy with his appearance at the annual Gridiron Dinner - and chalked it up as another one his administration's accomplishments.

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump arrive for the Gridiron Dinner in Washington, D.C., Saturday night. "I like chaos. It really is good", he said. It's actually been really exciting and invigorating 'cause you want new thought.

Gridiron President David Lightman, who cited the frequent friction between the president and the press, joked that he was surprised Trump chose to attend because it meant he "has to eat dinner at a hotel he doesn't own".

"I offered him a ride over and he recused himself" - and Vice President Mike Pence, who Trump said keeps asking "has he been impeached yet?"

He also said North Korea had called and asked to begin talks, but he said he responded that they would have to "denuke" first before talks could go forward. "Looking to find common ground with the president, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, a Democrat, observed that 'we're both a little overweight and balding - I just have had an easier time admitting it, '" the newspaper reported.

"Orrin said that 'Donald Trump is the best at self-deprecation in the history of America. Steve Miller or Melania?'" Trump said.

Trump, who has attacked the press as an "enemy of the people", teased the media in more jovial manner Saturday night. He's going to be president? "I do have a lot of respect for a lot of the people in this room".

"I do want to say this is one of the best times I can ever remember having with the media. And a lot of you cover things very squarely and there are few professions that i respect more".
