May Says Go-It-Alone Britain Will Thrive After Brexit

British Prime Minister Theresa May will mark the one-year countdown to Brexit on Thursday with a fast-paced national tour, aiming to unite the UK's four nations.

Both sides wanted the transition deal in place so that it could be signed off by EU leaders at a Brussels summit on Friday, allowing the unlocking of talks on the future British-EU relationship in April.

Would you still vote the same way in a Brexit referendum?

May stated that "we are absolutely committed to ensuring that there is no hard border".

As she visited parts of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland yesterday, her key message is one of unity for all those who voted for or against Brexit in the June 2016 referendum.

"There is going to be money that otherwise we would have been sending to the European Union", May told the BBC in an interview, a year to the day before Britain ends its 46 years of membership.

Mrs May insisted that each of the devolved administrations will see "an increase in their decision-making powers" as a result of the return of responsibilities now exercised by the EU.

But the Prime Minister wants around 20 of the 100-plus powers and responsibilities frozen until common frameworks can be agreed so that the UK's internal market is not harmed.

And she restated her rejection of EU proposals which would effectively create an administrative border down the Irish Sea by keeping Northern Ireland in the Customs Union.

"That means ensuring that no new barriers are created within our common domestic market and that the United Kingdom is able to meet its global obligations in the future".

"So there will be money available here in the United Kingdom for us to spend on our priorities".

"We had sincerely hoped that in 365 days' time we would be free from the shackles of the utterly disastrous CFP and starting to build a better future for our industry. No prime minister could leave these things to chance", she added.

Starting in Scotland she had an entirely natural cup of tea with factory workers before she visited a nursery school in Heddon-on-the-Wall where she got a amusing look from one of the parents but managed to avoid any of the children making her look ridiculous.

May was later to stop for lunch with farmers near Belfast in Northern Ireland before meeting Welsh business owners in Barry, then returning to London in time for tea with a Polish group.

On Wednesday, shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry faced criticism from within her own party for saying Labour MPs would probably approve the government's "blah, blah, blah" deal that would pass Labour's six tests - which included maintaining the benefits of the single market and customs union.
