Microsoft doubles down on artificial intelligence in engineering reorganization

If Microsoft Corp.'s employees didn't already realize cloud computing and artificial intelligence will drive their company's future much more than its venerable Windows software, they sure know it now.

The software giant reorganized its business Thursday morning around its growing Azure cloud-computing operations and its stalwart Office productivity business. In this one, Windows is going to be cleaved into a couple of parts - all in the name of making Microsoft over to focus on its high-growth businesses. Jason Zander is Executive Vice-President for Azure and Scott Guthrie will lead AI Platform+Cloud.

Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq:MSFT) announced today that Terry Myerson, the Executive Vice President of the company's Windows and Devices Group, will be leaving the company. The WDG is no more and the group is being split into "Experiences and Devices", which will be led by Rajesh Jha, Executive VP of Microsoft.

The future of Windows is bright as we continue to innovate across new scenarios and device form factors, and more deeply connect to our Microsoft 365 offerings.

Microsoft is also creating two new engineering teams focusing on artificial intelligence and its cloud business.

"Having a chief product officer is an indication that the company is leaning more into hardware products, not backing off", he told SiliconANGLE.

As it has been overtaken by the likes of Google and Apple, Microsoft has been rebooting as consumers shift away from Windows-powered computers to mobile devices. Joe Belfiore will remain as Windows experiences leader, Kudo Tsunoda will remain as new experiences and technology leader, and Brad Anderson will continue to lead Windows Enterprise. The feature is now limited to Microsoft's Outlook, Hotmail, Live, and Office 365 services-anyone who uses Gmail, Yahoo, or Exchange Server calendars is going to miss out. The latter area seems to be a particular focus of Nadella's reorganization.

He said that during their hoped-for meeting the two men would likely discuss Ukraine, Syria and North Korea, among other things. We should want to preserve the situation where Trump lacks normal executive control over US-Russia relations.
