Uber to settle with family of victim in self-driving auto crash

According to Reuters, Uber Technologies Inc. apparently dodged a big legal bullet by settling the case outside of the courts. "Uber develops its own sensing and drive technology", said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

It is true that since at least 2015, Ducey has offered prominent support for autonomous vehicles in general. A week after Uber halted testing, Arizona's governor ordered the company's self-driving cars off state roads. Uber's accident, he said, "is an unquestionable failure to comply with this expectation".

Some lawmakers believe the authorities should step up the regulation of this new technology.

Should companies be more transparent about their new technologies? Police described the incident to KRON-TV as a "freak accident". He also appears to not be watching the road in the seconds leading up to the impact.

Removing LIDAR sensors from the front, back and sides and replacing them with a 360-degree sensor on the roof is more cost-effective but results in a blind spot low to the ground all around the auto. That's something autonomous-driving software must do.

Uber referred questions on the blind spot to Velodyne. She died of her injuries at a local hospital.

Experts who reviewed the video said Herzberg should have been detected by the SUV's suite of self-driving sensors and that an attentive human driver could likely have avoided the collision.

The Uber crash is being investigated by Tempe police, as well as the National Transportation Safety Board and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Nvidia's chief executive officer Jensen Huang claimed that Uber does not use the self-driving platform architecture of Nvidia Corp.

The governor of Arizona put the brakes on Uber's self-driving program in that state, citing "disturbing and alarming" dashcam footage from the fatal crash. In a tweet, he said he was "very disturbed" by the crash video.

Uber terminates self-driving cars service in California public streets.

Uber, the largest ride-sharing company in the world, has stated that it is slated to let the company's permit with the state of California to test self-driving vehicles on the state's public roads expire on Saturday, March 31, 2018. But he said the accident won't affect Toyota's relationship with Uber. "This is obviously one of the lows".

Member station KJZZ in Tempe reports that an attorney for the victim's family, Christina Perez Hesano, confirmed the settlement Wednesday night, but provided few details. Earlier this week, it was revealed that the company wouldn't be reapplying for a permit to test its self-driving cars in California. "What would happen if we weren't a part of that future? We continue to assist investigators in any way we can".
