Trump vows to deploy military to Mexican border

President Donald Trump said he plans to deploy US military forces to protect the nation's southern border with Mexico while the border wall is being constructed.

Trump wanted as much as $25 billion to build a wall on the border between the US and Mexico, but the legislation only authorized $1.6 billion for fencing, surveillance technology, and other measures. The president also tweeted about "caravans" on Sunday and Monday.

Trump says the phenomenon is proof of the need for a wall.

The president fired off several tweets on Tuesday about the caravan march toward the "Weak Laws" border of Mexico.

The report found that there were some benefits from the co-operation, such as a deterrent effect on criminals, and building relationships between various law enforcement branches, but the military's border assistance was "ad-hoc" and lacking a precise role in a clearly-defined strategy.

Obama's move came at a moment of heightened political tension over border security, with prominent Republicans including John McCain, the Arizona senator, anxious about drug cartel violence and demanding enhanced measures, as tighter security in California increasingly led migrants to find entry points to the east.

Among the new measures the administration is pursuing: ending special safeguards that prevent the immediate deportation of children arrested at the border and traveling alone.

The administration is also pushing Congress to terminate a 1997 court settlement that requires the government to release children from custody to parents, adult relatives or other caretakers as their court cases proceed. It allocated zero dollars for his border wall.

On Monday, the Republican president railed against Democrats over immigration and again pressed U.S. lawmakers to pass legislation to build his long-promised border wall between the United States and Mexico. He also claimed DACA, which has provided temporary protection from deportation and work permits to hundreds of thousands of young people, is luring people to cross the border illegally, even though the program - and most proposals to replace it - have never been open to new arrivals. It is not clear how widely the idea has been embraced by other top Republicans, including Speaker Paul Ryan or Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump announced past year that he was ending DACA, the program that protects young "Dreamer" immigrants and allows them to work legally in the country, but the Department of Homeland Security is continuing to issue renewals because of a court order.

Individuals in the caravans often try to reach the USA border but usually not as part of the caravan.

Trump accused Mexico of abetting and profiting from illegal immigration, which he pledged in his 2016 election campaign to halt. Two caravans traveled north a year ago and others have made similar trips since 2010.

After days of trekking along roadsides and train tracks, the organizers now plan to try to get buses to take participants to the final event, an immigrants' rights conference in the central state of Puebla. "It's like we have no border".
