Backpage Gets Shut Down By The Feds, Co-Founder Charged

Backpage has denied knowingly facilitating sex trafficking and has noted that it cooperates with requests from law enforcement to help track down advertisers and victims.

According to the notice on the site, that was posted on Friday, April 6, 2018, USA attorneys in Arizona and California, as well as the Justice Department's section on child exploitation and obscenity supported the work in seizing control of the website.

A Washington Post investigation past year found that Backpage was using a contractor in the Philippines to contact prostitutes on other websites, seeking to lure their ads to Backpage and creating the ads for those prostitutes in advance. However, a judge decided that the federal case should remain sealed on Friday night.

Visitors to the site and its Canadian version were shown a notice by various federal agencies declaring they had seized the domain. Backpage's adult services listings carrying adverts from sex workers, which are purportedly the focus of criminal probes. They designated Backpage, mentioning dozens of circumstances in which minors had been trafficked via the website.

The site has long skirted the law by allowing users to post ads for "escorts" who are paid for their time rather than for sex, with whatever happens on the date being activity between two consensual adults.
