Israeli jets target Gaza position after infiltration attempt

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) has condemned Israel's ongoing aggression against peaceful Palestinian protesters, as well as media and medical personnel, along the Israel-Gaza border. Israel was already facing global scrutiny and accusations of disproportionate use of force over these recent killings.

After a one-day investigation of the incident, the military said in a statement released on Tuesday that "it should be noted that these do not suit the degree of restraint expected of Israel Defense Forces soldiers and will be dealt by commanders accordingly".

"His use of the drone was to show that Gaza has a handsome and vibrant face", said his 24-year-old brother, Mutasim.

Despite widespread outcry and worldwide calls for investigations into the killings, the Israeli army has maintained its open fire policy, and has commended its soldiers for their actions on the border.

The military said it struck a Hamas "terror target" in a military compound in Gaza early on Monday.

The footage emerged Monday appearing to show a soldier shooting a Palestinian near the Gaza fence as other soldiers are heard cheering when he falls.

The video, Jubran went on to assert, "can be used as documentary evidence to try them [i.e., Israeli army officers] as war criminals".

Rushdi Al-Serraj, director at Ain Media and co-founder with Murtaja, said Lieberman's statements were "ridiculous comments that are not worth responding to".

Remarking on the video on Tuesday, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told reporters the Israeli sniper "deserves a decoration, and the photographer a demerit". He added that it was "understandable" that soldiers at the front sometimes had to let off steam.

"They killed a journalist and should confess it is a crime".

Mass protests peaking on Fridays have led to clashes in which Israeli forces have killed 31 Palestinians.

The military said the man was a main instigator in the clashes and was shot in the leg and wounded after ignoring warning shots and calls to halt.

Israel's defense minister said Tuesday that a Palestinian journalist who was shot dead by Israeli troops on the Israeli-Gaza border was a Hamas operative, although the media production company he founded had recently been vetted for a US government grant. Mr. Murtaja, 30, wore a protective vest marked "Press".

The PA had argued at the time that its decisions were caused by Hamas collecting government revenues in Gaza without sending them back to the Ramallah-based authority, whereas Hamas has accused the PA of deliberately applying further economic pressure on the impoverished coastal territory, which has been under an Israeli-imposed blockade for almost 11 years.
