Tehran officials have said Western powers are using last week's alleged chemical attack on a rebel-held stronghold as an excuse to undermine the Syrian government's recent successes on the battlefield.

"This is the first time as prime minister that I have had to take the decision to commit our armed forces in combat - and it is not a decision I have taken lightly", she said.

"This aggression is created to compensate for the defeat of the terrorists" in Eastern Ghouta, an area recently recaptured by Syrian government forces, Iran's foreign ministry said.

Iran's involvement in Syria in support of Assad has alarmed Israel, which has said it will counter any threat.

Now that the United States and its Western allies have retaliated for the Douma attack with missile strikes against targets in Syria, it is obvious that Iran will also pay a heavy price. Trump said Washington is prepared to "sustain" pressure on Assad until he ends what the president called a criminal pattern of killing his own people with internationally banned chemical weapons.

Hundreds of Syrians gathered at landmark squares in the Syrian capital Saturday, honking their auto horns, flashing victory signs and waving Syrian flags in scenes of defiance that followed unprecedented joint airstrikes by the United States, France and Britain.

The United States and European allies launched airstrikes on Saturday against Syrian research, storage and military targets under the pretext of a suspected chemical attack near Damascus last weekend that killed more than 40 people.

The US used Tomahawk cruise missiles in its strikes in Syria, which were fired at multiple targets in the country, a US official said.

"The U.S. -led coalition's strike on Syria will make the regional situation more complicated".

The investigation claims come shortly after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Israel had placed itself in direct confrontation with Iran.

He added that the USA military is not aware of any civilian deaths.

A drone that required off from Syria and penetrated Israeli airspace in February was armed forces and within an Iranian mission to carry out an attack in Israeli territory, the Israeli military said Friday.

The Israeli strike and the Russian response came only a few days after a Russian-Iranian-Turkish summit, in which the three countries discussed joint plans to end the Syrian civil war in a mutually acceptable way while cutting the USA out of any influence in the process. Trump asked in his address before ordering the airstrike on Syriam chemical weapons sites.

With the strike, U.S. President Donald Trump challenges Syria's two main allies over their association with the gas attack believed to have been conducted by the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said there were no reports of US losses in what he described as a heavy but carefully limited assault.

Syrian television reported that Syria's air defenses, which are substantial, responded to the attack.
